Top 5 Things to Do in Michigan
Michigan Is Fun for the Entire Family
Michigan has a lot to offer. We proudly boast of being surrounded by the Five Great Lakes, which include Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and Lake Superior. We have lots of wooded areas that are perfect for hiking and camping, and since Michigan experiences all four seasons, we offer great accommodations for winter sports.
I’m going to share some of my favorite things to do in Michigan here. Everyone’s opinion might be different, and others might think something else is better, but these are the options I like and want to share with you.
I have lived in Michigan since I was a year old. Born in West Virginia, my parents moved to Michigan for work. It’s a beautiful State!
Upper & Lower Peninsulas Make Michigan Unique
There is an upper and lower peninsula that makes up Michigan. I live in the lower peninsula in the area that is considered West or Western Michigan. See photos below:
#1. Pere Marquette Park Beach in Muskegon, Michigan.
This is near and dear to my heart, because I grew up 20 minutes from here, and spent many days as a teen (and an adult) driving around the park and walking on the boardwalk. It’s a lovely place to have picnics, play volleyball, go swimming or simply enjoy the sunshine and great outdoors. They have a nice shower room/changing room that include restrooms for men and women, and they have play areas for smaller children.
You can watch the boats go from Lake Michigan to Muskegon Lake which connect in the harbor. And there are many wonderful photo opportunities, too! Below is a lovely photo taken at Pere Marquette Park on an evening when there was a beautiful sunset: (from Wikipedia)

#2. Frankenmuth, Michigan
Frankenmuth, Michigan is a very fun place to visit. They consider themselves a “Little Bavaria,” and they offer Christmas shops year around, as well as delectable places to dine.
It’s fun to walk the small streets of the town and visit little shops. They offer everything from fudge and kitchen items, to Christmas decorations and toys.
I like to visit here as often as I can. It’s a fun outing for a group of friends, or make it a family affair.

#3. Dutch Village in Holland, Michigan
Dutch Village is one of my favorite places to visit in Michigan. It is located about 45 miles SE of where I live, and it offers a touch of Holland to all who enter. You can watch a movie about Holland; take photos by a water wheel or in a giant stork; visit a replica of a small Dutch farm house; feed goats, sheep, and other animals; ride a swing and a merry-go-round; and best of all, visit the gift shops that are located inside the village, but are also accessible outside of the village, so you don’t have to pay the entrance fee to get in.
They make the best fudge in the world, and also offer other candies and foods, as well as eating areas that serve hot foods. You’ll find gifts for the entire family, and you’ll be able to purchase wooden shoes, and even watch them being made.
I can’t get enough of this place!!!

#4. Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, Michigan
It’s been many years since I have been to the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, MI, and they have much more to offer than they did when I visited. I went there on a single’s retreat with a friend 20 years or so ago.
Some of the things they offer include horseback riding, golf, an indoor water park, snow tubing and more. You can stay there for your honeymoon, have business meetings there or simply go there to enjoy fine dining and fun times. Spend a day, a weekend or a week. Many people have birthday parties and anniversary parties there, also. Or you can bring a group from school or church to enjoy a day of activities and fun.

#5. Mackinac Island, Michigan
Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island is located in the upper peninsula of Michigan. You take a ferry to get there, and you can spend all day or stay in one of the island’s hotels, including the Grand Hotel, which truly is “grand.” I worked there right out of high school cleaning the hotel rooms. They are luxurious and roomy.
Along with Dutch Village, Mackinac Island has some of the best fudge in the world. Along with fudge and other foods and beverages, you’ll find gift shops offering gifts of all sorts.
You can also take a horse-driven buggy ride around the island or rent bicycles for everyone, and take your timem and explore the island at your leisure.
Mackinac Island is one of the top 10 islands in the world and it sits on beautiful Lake Huron. They hold yearly festivals and other events that you might enjoy, also. If you’ve never been there, I highly recommend that you take your family!
